Explore the rich heritage and scenic beauty of Nepal on this 12-day journey. Meet an experienced Sherpa climber to hear first-hand stories of Mount Everest and the Himalayas.

Overview

Kathmandu Valley reveals itself slowly—in the quiet courtyards behind busy streets, the sound of temple bells, and the small workshops where skills pass from one generation to the next. This 12-day journey gives you time to explore these places and understand the people and traditions that bring them to life.

Begin in Kathmandu, visiting historic squares, Buddhist stupas and Hindu pilgrimage sites with your guide. A conversation with an experienced Himalayan climber offers a personal glimpse into Nepal’s mountaineering life. In Patan, explore artisan neighbourhoods, learn to prepare momos and try an introductory painting activity.

From the cities, travel into the surrounding hills. Spend two nights in Nagarkot, where clear mornings may reveal the Himalayan skyline, before continuing to Namo Buddha for monastery visits and countryside walks. A day exploring the paths around Balthali brings you closer to village life, terraced farmland and the quieter landscapes beyond the valley.

Finish in Bhaktapur, with time to explore its courtyards, pottery squares and old streets at your own pace. Combining guided visits, comfortable stays and unhurried moments, this tour offers a thoughtful introduction to Nepal’s cultural heart.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu

An Alpinist Club representative welcomes you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel. After settling in, meet our team for a short briefing about the days ahead.

The rest of the day is yours to rest or take a gentle walk nearby. Your first evening is a chance to ease into Kathmandu’s rhythm, find a local restaurant and recover from your journey.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Not included
Activity: Airport transfer and trip briefing

Day 2: Explore Kathmandu’s Heritage and Sacred Sites

Spend the day discovering the valley’s cultural and spiritual traditions with your guide. Begin at Kathmandu Durbar Square, where temples, courtyards and former royal buildings sit alongside the activity of the old city.

Continue to Swayambhunath, then visit Boudhanath, where prayer wheels and pilgrims surround the stupa. At Pashupatinath, your guide explains the significance of the sacred temple complex and the rituals observed along the river. Visits follow local access rules.

There is time for lunch between the visits, and the order may change to suit traffic and conditions.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast
Sightseeing: 6–8 hours, including transfers and walking

Day 3: A Conversation with a Himalayan Climber

Meet an experienced Himalayan climber and hear about mountain life beyond the summit photographs. The conversation offers an opportunity to ask about preparation, teamwork, difficult decisions and the experience of returning home after an expedition.

The afternoon is free. You might explore Thamel, browse bookshops or enjoy a quiet café before another day of cultural discovery.

The meeting is subject to the climber’s availability. Any alternative will be discussed before booking confirmation.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast
Climber meeting: 1–2 hours, subject to confirmation

Day 4: Walk through Old Kathmandu and Travel to Patan

Begin with a guided walk through Kathmandu’s older neighbourhoods. Away from the main roads, small shrines, shopfronts and shared courtyards offer a closer view of daily life.

Later, travel to Patan and check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon settling in, or take a short walk through the surrounding streets. Staying here gives you time to enjoy the city beyond a brief sightseeing visit.

A visit connected with Patan’s Kumari tradition may be arranged, subject to local schedules and access.

Later, join a momo-making session. Learn to fill and fold the dumplings, then enjoy the meal you have helped prepare. In the afternoon, try an introductory painting workshop inspired by traditional Buddhist art. This is a simple guided activity suited to beginners.

FAQ's

1. What makes this Kathmandu Valley tour different from a regular sightseeing tour? :

This 12-day journey gives you time to experience places beyond their main monuments. Alongside guided heritage visits, you join cooking and painting activities, explore village paths and stay overnight in Patan and Bhaktapur rather than visiting them briefly

2. Will we meet a climber who has summited Mount Everest? :

The programme includes a meeting with an experienced Himalayan climber, subject to availability. Their climbing background and availability will be confirmed before booking; a meeting with an Everest summiteer is not guaranteed.

3. Do I need experience to join the cooking and painting activities? :

No experience is needed. You will receive guidance during the momo-making session and introductory painting activity. The painting workshop is a simple creative experience, rather than a course in completing a traditional Thangka.

4. Can we visit the Living Goddess, Kumari, in Patan? :

A visit may be arranged when local schedules and visitor access permit. An appearance or personal audience cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will explain the tradition and the etiquette to follow.

5. How challenging is the walk around Balthali? :

Allow around 4–6 hours for the proposed walking day, depending on the confirmed route. Paths may include steps, uneven ground and uphill sections. Tell us about your walking ability before booking so we can discuss a shorter route or vehicle support.

6. Will we stay in Balthali after the village walk? :

In this itinerary, Balthali is a day excursion, and you return to your accommodation near Namo Buddha. An overnight stay in Balthali can be requested as a customised arrangement, subject to availability and revised pricing.

7. Are Himalayan views from Nagarkot guaranteed? :

No. Mountain views depend on cloud cover and visibility. The itinerary allows two nights in Nagarkot, offering more opportunity to enjoy the scenery, but clear sunrise views cannot be promised.

8. Can we attend prayers at the Namo Buddha monastery? :

You may be able to observe prayers if the monastery’s schedule and visitor rules allow. Access to ceremonies is not guaranteed. Your guide will check local arrangements and explain how to visit respectfully.

9. Do we walk from Bhaktapur to Changu Narayan? :

No. The planned itinerary uses a private vehicle between these destinations, with walking during the sightseeing visits. A longer countryside walking route can be discussed separately before booking.

10. Why is there a free day in Bhaktapur? :

The free day lets you enjoy the city without a fixed schedule. You can revisit favourite squares, browse craft shops or spend time around the pottery area. Additional guided activities can be arranged in advance at extra cost.
