Humla Limi Valley Trek – 20 Days | Remote Himalayan Adventure in Nepal

The Humla Limi Valley Trek – 20 Days is a remote Himalayan adventure in far-western Nepal, exploring traditional villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and spectacular mountain landscapes near the Tibetan border. The journey passes through Kermi, Yalbang, Yari, Hilsa, Til, Halji, and Jang, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s Tibetan-influenced culture and traditional way of life.

The trek crosses Nara La Pass (4,620 m) and Nyalu La Pass (4,940 m), the highest point of the journey. Due to limited accommodation facilities, most nights are spent in tented camps supported by an experienced trekking and kitchen crew.

With challenging high-altitude crossings, remote trails, and limited access to facilities, this trek is best suited to fit travelers with previous trekking experience who are looking for an authentic Himalayan adventure away from Nepal’s busier trekking routes.

  • Altitude: 2,950 m
  • Flight: Approx. 45–60 minutes
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

Today we follow the Humla Karnali River through a beautiful valley surrounded by rocky hills and agricultural terraces. • Final Altitude: 2,670 m
  • Trekking Time: Approx. 5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Leaving Kermi, we follow the Karnali River and cross suspension bridges while gradually gaining altitude. The trail passes through peaceful settlements and rugged mountain terrain before reaching Yalbang. We can visit the impressive Buddhist monastery above the village.

  • Final Altitude: 3,020 m
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

The trail continues through increasingly remote landscapes as we follow the Karnali Valley. We pass Yangar and other small settlements before reaching Muchu and continuing toward Tumkot. The Tibetan Buddhist influence becomes increasingly visible through mani walls, prayer flags, and monasteries.

  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

Today the landscape becomes drier and more dramatic as we climb higher toward the Nepal–Tibet border region. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the surroundings take on the character of the Tibetan Plateau. We eventually reach Yari, where we camp and prepare for the first major high pass of the trek.

  • Final Altitude: Approx. 3,700 m
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

This is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek. We begin early and climb steadily toward Nara La Pass, decorated with prayer flags and stone cairns. • Final Altitude: Approx. 3,900 m
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

  • Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp

We enjoy a relatively short trekking day, following the Limi River toward Halji. This allows plenty of time to explore the village and experience local culture. Halji is famous for its ancient Rinchenling Monastery, one of the most important cultural highlights of the entire trek.

  • Final Altitude: Approx. 3,660 m
  • Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

  • Trekking Time: 7–8 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

  • Final Altitude: Approx. 3,620 m
  • Trekking Time: 7–9 hours

Your Guide and Team During the Humla Limi Valley Trek

Your guide, from your arrival in Kathmandu until your departure, is responsible for the success of your trip and oversees your team. Do not hesitate to ask him questions, respect his position as the team leader, and above all follow his advice! Often your guide is the only English-speaking member of the team. In the mountains and, especially when during high-altitude travels, your guide is responsible for the safety of the group. The instructions he gives and the remarks he makes to all participants must be carefully followed. The interest and safety of the trekking group must be preserved, even when it may be to the detriment of an individual member of the group.

Drinking Water

Safe drinking water is essential throughout the trek. Water purification tablets or another suitable treatment method should be used according to the water source and your guide’s advice.

Carry reusable water bottles and refill them with appropriately treated water whenever possible. Avoid single-use plastic bottles to reduce environmental waste in remote mountain areas.

Physical Preparation

The Humla Limi Valley Trek involves long walking days, remote trails, and high-altitude passes. Good physical fitness and endurance are important for enjoying the journey comfortably.

  • Begin preparing several months before departure. Recommended training includes:
  • Regular hiking on varied terrain, including uphill and downhill trails.
  • Weekend walks lasting approximately four to six hours.
  • Cardiovascular exercise, such as cycling, running, or swimming.
  • Strength and balance exercises to improve stability and endurance.
  • Practice walking with a daypack on consecutive days.

Previous trekking experience is beneficial, particularly for travelers who have not trekked in remote or high-altitude regions.

Medical Check-Up

A medical check-up before departure is recommended to ensure you are fit for the physical demands and altitude of the trek. Discuss your planned itinerary, maximum elevation, and any existing health concerns with your doctor.

A dental check-up is also advisable before traveling to remote areas, where access to medical and dental facilities may be limited. If you have concerns about altitude exposure, consult a healthcare professional experienced in mountain medicine.

Bring sufficient supplies of any personal medication you require and inform your guide of relevant health concerns before the trek begins.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

The trek reaches high elevations, including Nyalu La Pass at approximately 4,940 meters, where altitude sickness can occur.

Common symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Serious altitude-related illnesses, including high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), can be life-threatening.

To reduce the risk:

  • Follow the planned acclimatization schedule.
  • Ascend gradually and stay hydrated.
  • Inform your guide immediately if you experience altitude-related symptoms.
  • Do not continue ascending when symptoms suggest altitude sickness.
  • Descend promptly and seek medical assistance if serious symptoms develop.

Medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) may be appropriate for some travelers, but it should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional before the trip. Medication does not replace proper acclimatization or the need to descend when necessary.

Your safety is our priority, and the guide may change the itinerary if altitude, weather, or health conditions make it necessary.
