Upper Mustang Circuit Trek – Explore the Ancient Kingdom of Lo

The Upper Mustang circuit Trek is a remarkable journey into the former Kingdom of Lo, a remote Himalayan region deeply influenced by Tibetan culture, traditions, and history. Once an independent kingdom with strong historical connections to Tibet, Mustang became part of Nepal while preserving its unique cultural identity, ancient monasteries, traditional villages, and centuries-old way of life.

Reaching elevations of approximately 4,100 metres, this trek takes you through spectacular landscapes of ochre, red, and brown rock formations, dramatic eroded cliffs, deep gorges, and high mountain passes. The trail initially follows relatively gentle paths through traditional settlements, offering opportunities to experience local lifestyles, ancient architecture, and the warm hospitality of the Mustang people.

One of the major highlights is Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo. We spend two days exploring this fascinating medieval city, including its narrow alleyways, traditional houses, ancient monasteries, and cultural landmarks. You will visit the three historic gompas, Champa Lhakang Palace, the Tupchen and Choede monasteries, and the local museum, which preserves the region's rich history and heritage.

Another unforgettable experience is the excursion to Konchok Ling Cave, an extraordinary archaeological site discovered in 2007, featuring remarkable ancient Buddhist artwork and historical significance. You will also have time to explore the quieter northwestern areas of Lo Manthang, where traditional settlements and less-visited trails offer a deeper insight into local life. A ridge walk to the historic fort of Ame Pal adds another cultural dimension to the journey.

On the return journey, the route crosses scenic high passes, including Paha Pass (4,220 m) and Gyu La (4,077 m), providing spectacular views of Mustang's rugged terrain and the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

Throughout the trek, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, explore ancient Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and discover one of Nepal's most fascinating and culturally preserved regions.

The Upper Mustang Trek is more than a mountain adventure; it is a journey through an ancient Himalayan kingdom where dramatic landscapes, Tibetan culture, and centuries-old traditions come together to create an unforgettable experience.

We cross on foot a bridge and we change vehicles. The track leads us to Chele where we discover vertical manis, which is unusual. We arrive at a pass at 3,500 m from where the view of the snow-capped mountains is magnificent. We descend towards the village of Samar which is an important caravan stopover. Samar in Tibetan means "red earth". Walk in the wooded village of willows and poplars. We see the fields of barley and wheat. In the distance the Nilgiri (7,134m) and Tilicho (7,161m) dominate us.

After lunch, possible to walk there and back (approximately 1 hour) to discover the longest mani wall in Mustang (3500ft). We leave Ghemi; the path takes us to a new small pass. Visit of the monastery. Small descent in the thalweg and we gradually climb to Ghar La, accompanied by the song of a small stream. A first pass before crossing the side that bypasses the valley takes us to the second pass of Ghar La at 4280 meters. There are many walks around Lo Manthang, in the middle of fields of barley, mustard, and buckwheat. Ancient monasteries with very beautiful paintings and magnificent mandalas are worth a visit. Optional excursion to Choser, in the direction of Tibet: its caves, its monastery half built into the cliff. In this case, we have to hire horses to go back and forth during the day.

Magnificent view of the village and the river. Long climb to the pass around 4000 meters before plunging again towards the village of Tangye (3340m). The arrival above the village and its fields is superb! Visit of this lost village with remarkable architecture with its magnificent alignment of chortens.

  • 6 hours of walking
  • Final altitude: approximately 3,400m
  • Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
  • Accommodation: night in a lodge

The stage is long, with many climbs and descents! After a short descent into the gorge, the path, initially horizontal to the torrent, climbs “dry” to 4,100 meters to arrive at the Paha pass (4,220 m) (4-hour walk). This is followed by three hours of “Nepalese flat” between 4,200 and 4,300 meters; the path zigzags from plateau to plateau, from ridge to ridge, between very jagged rock formations, before a dive on Chhusang (2,980m), a village that we already know. • Summer/Monsoon (June–August): A good option because Upper Mustang receives less rainfall than many other regions of Nepal.

                    • Winter (December–February): Very cold conditions, possible snowfall, and limited lodge availability.

                    12. Permits and Entry Requirements

Electricity and charging facilities are available in many villages, although services may be limited in remote areas. 17. Responsible and Sustainable Trekking

Upper Mustang is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, traditional villages, and fragile mountain landscapes. We encourage responsible tourism throughout the journey. Please respect local traditions, ask permission before photographing people, dress appropriately when visiting monasteries, avoid littering, and use reusable water bottles. Supporting local lodges and businesses also helps preserve the region's cultural heritage and local economy.

                    18. Money and Personal Expenses

There are limited banking and ATM facilities in Upper Mustang. We recommend carrying enough Nepalese cash from Kathmandu or Pokhara.
