Meals and Accommodation in Nepal During the Trek

Nepal offers a wide range of accommodation and dining options to suit different budgets, travel styles, and trekking destinations. From comfortable hotels in Kathmandu to traditional mountain teahouses and remote wilderness camps, your experience will vary depending on your itinerary and altitude.

During your trek, you can enjoy traditional Nepali dishes, international meals, and freshly prepared food along the trail. At Alpinist Club, we aim to make your journey comfortable by arranging suitable accommodation and coordinating meals according to your itinerary.

Accommodation in Kathmandu

During your stay in Kathmandu, you will be accommodated in a comfortable hotel selected according to availability, your package, and your preferences.

Please note that the hotel may vary depending on availability, your selected package, and your accommodation preferences.

Accommodation During the Trek: Teahouses and Lodges

Teahouses and mountain lodges are the most common forms of accommodation on Nepal's established trekking routes. They provide a welcoming place to rest, eat, and spend the night while experiencing local mountain hospitality.

Most teahouses offer twin-sharing rooms with two single beds and shared dining areas. Facilities and comfort levels vary by region and altitude. Lower-altitude lodges generally offer more amenities, while accommodation at higher elevations is often simpler and more basic.

What to Expect

  • Rooms: Usually basic twin-sharing rooms, with private rooms available at some lodges.
  • Bathrooms: Shared toilets are common, particularly at higher elevations. Some lodges offer rooms with attached bathrooms.
  • Heating: Heating is generally available in the communal dining area rather than in individual bedrooms.
  • Hot showers: Available at some lodges for an additional charge, depending on facilities and weather conditions.
  • Electricity: Available in many trekking areas, although supply may be limited or unreliable at higher elevations.
  • Wi-Fi: Offered at some teahouses for an additional fee, but connections can be slow or unavailable in remote areas.

We recommend bringing a suitable sleeping bag, especially for high-altitude treks and journeys during colder months. A power bank and spare batteries are also useful because charging electronic devices may be difficult or expensive in remote locations.

Facilities and additional service charges vary from one lodge to another. Your guide can help you understand the available services and any applicable costs.

Meals During the Trek

Food is an important part of the trekking experience in Nepal. Teahouses offer traditional Nepali dishes alongside a selection of international meals, including pasta, noodles, soups, potatoes, rice dishes, and eggs.

The variety of food available depends on the trekking region, altitude, and remoteness of the route. In more remote areas, ingredients may be limited, but meals are generally designed to provide the energy needed for long days of walking.

Breakfast

Breakfast is usually served at the lodge before the day's trek. Common options include:

  • Eggs prepared in different styles
  • Tibetan bread or chapati
  • Toast with butter or jam
  • Pancakes
  • Porridge or muesli
  • Tea, coffee, or other available hot drinks

The selection varies depending on the lodge.

Lunch

Lunch is generally taken at a teahouse along the trail or at a suitable stopping point during the trek. Depending on your itinerary and location, options may include:

  • Dal bhat with rice, lentil soup, and vegetables
  • Fried rice or noodles
  • Pasta with vegetables
  • Potatoes and vegetable dishes
  • Soups and other locally available meals

On particularly long trekking days, a packed lunch may be arranged when necessary.

Afternoon Snacks

After reaching your lodge or campsite, you may enjoy tea, coffee, biscuits, or other available snacks. Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate can also help maintain your energy levels between meals.

We recommend bringing your preferred energy snacks, particularly for remote treks where supplies may be limited.

Dinner

Dinner is usually served in the evening at your lodge or camp. Common options include:

  • Dal bhat with vegetables
  • Rice and curry
  • Pasta or noodles
  • Potato dishes
  • Vegetable soup
  • Other locally available meals

The menu depends on the destination and the facilities available along the route.

Dal Bhat: A Traditional Nepali Meal

Dal bhat is one of Nepal's most popular traditional meals and a staple food for many trekking communities. It typically consists of steamed rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetables, and sometimes additional side dishes or pickles.

It is particularly popular among trekkers because it provides carbohydrates, protein, and other nutrients needed for sustained physical activity. Many restaurants and teahouses offer additional servings, depending on their policies.

Along the trail, you can also discover regional dishes that reflect the local culture and traditions of Nepal's mountain communities.

Drinking Water and Hydration

Staying hydrated is essential when trekking, especially at high altitudes. Drink water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.

Bottled water may be available in many trekking areas, but prices often increase with altitude. To reduce plastic waste and manage costs, we recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and a suitable water purification method, such as purification tablets, a filter, or another reliable treatment system.

Where hot drinks are available, tea and coffee can provide a welcome break during the trek. However, they should not replace your regular water intake.

Follow your guide's advice regarding safe drinking water and hydration at altitude.

Special Dietary Requirements and Food Allergies

If you follow a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or other special diet, or have food allergies, please inform Alpinist Club when booking your trip.

Our team will communicate your requirements to the guide and accommodation providers and make reasonable efforts to arrange suitable meals. However, food choices can be limited in remote mountain areas, and some lodges may not be able to accommodate every dietary requirement.

Cross-contact with allergens may also occur in kitchens where separate food preparation facilities are unavailable.

If you have strict dietary requirements or significant food allergies, we recommend bringing suitable backup foods and discussing your needs with our team before departure.

Meals on Long Trekking Days

Some trekking days involve early starts, long walking hours, or crossings of high mountain passes. On these occasions, breakfast may be served earlier than usual, and your guide may adjust meal arrangements according to the itinerary and weather conditions.

Carry energy-rich snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, energy bars, or other suitable foods to maintain your energy throughout the day. Your guide will advise you about meal stops and the supplies needed for challenging sections of the route.

What Is Included in Your Trekking Package?
